Living a Life of Purpose: Discovering God’s Plan for Your Life
When seeking to live a life of purpose, we can often get caught up in pursuing success, happiness, and material possessions. Regardless of how much we toil and spin in this world to get ahead, for some, they are just trying to stay above water. We focus on taking care of our minds and bodies, and while this is important, we often overlook the importance of nurturing our spiritual well-being.
Life, our world and eternity continue beyond our efforts, since we have none of that without God, who created all things. To live a life purposefully, our efforts should align with the purposes of God. In this article, we will explore some steps to help you discover and live out God’s plan for your life.

1. God’s Relationship for a Life of Purpose
The foundation of living a life of purpose begins with understanding our need for a relationship with God. Take time each day to pray, read the scriptures, and listen for God’s guidance.
Seek His will for your life and ask Him to reveal His purposes to you. Through this connection with God, you will find greater clarity and direction.

2. Discover Your God-Given Skills
We are each of uniquely gifted with skills, talents and passions that God has placed within us. Take the time to explore and identify these benefits.
Two Questions:
A. What do you naturally do well?
B. What activities bring you joy and fulfillment?
Reflect on these questions and ask friends and family who know you well. Then, reciprocate by sharing with them what you see as natural talents for them. Discovering your talents and passions will help you understand where God may lead you.

3. Align Your Goals with God’s Purposes
As you gain a clearer understanding of your talents and passions, consider how you can align your goals and ambitions with God’s purposes. If you feel stuck or unsure if you have the tools in your toolbox, ask Him to equip you.
“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.” - 1 John 5:13-15.
Asking God for clearer understanding means seeking opportunities that allow you to use your gifts to serve others and make a positive impact on the world. Whether it is through your career, volunteering, or personal relationships, aim to bring glory to God in everything you do.

Before Moving on, let’s Look Four Questions From the Scripture:
A. What Does This Scripture Mean?
This means that believers who have faith in the name of the Son of God (Jesus) are being assured that they have eternal life. By giving us this scripture, He wrote it to allow us a confirmation of our faith.
B. What Does This Scripture NOT Mean?
This does not mean that believers can ask for anything and expect to receive it from God. The condition is that prayers need to be aligned with God’s will.
C. How do we Know to Pray for Something According to His Will?
We can know what to pray for according to God’s will by seeking His guidance through studying and understanding His Word, the Bible. As we grow in our relationship with God, His Spirit also helps us align our desires with His will. If you ask Him for something and internally, it doesn’t feel aligned with what you believe God would do, it’s probably not His will.
Example: “Lord, please let me win the big lottery game tonight. If I win, imagine all the good I could do to help people.”
God is already 1,000 or more steps ahead of us and we don’t need to sell Him on a cool idea.
D. How do we Know What His Will is?
God reveals His will through scripture, teachings, and principles outlined in the Bible. The more we study and understand His Word, the better we can discern His will for different situations. Overall, the passage teaches that when believers have confidence in approaching God and pray according to His will; He hears them and grants their requests. The assurance of having what we ask comes from aligning with God’s will and having faith in Him.

4. Be Open to God’s Guidance
Sometimes, God’s plan for our lives differs from what we might initially envision. Being open to His guidance and trust that He knows what is best for us is important. Be willing to step out of your comfort zone and pursue new opportunities that God presents. Remember, His ways are higher than ours, and He may have a greater plan in store for you.

5. Develop a Heart of Compassion
Living a life of purpose involves caring for and serving others. Take the time to help those in need. We don’t have to look too far to see people that need help. Whether we help through acts of kindness, volunteering, or supporting charitable causes, each supports God’s will. Cultivating a heart of compassion allows you to bring God’s love and blessing into the lives of those around you. You become a difference-maker.

6. Embrace Resilience and Perseverance
Here’s a reality: Pursuing a life of purpose is not always easy. There will be challenges, setbacks, and moments of doubt. It is during those times that we must lean on our faith and trust in God’s plans. Embrace resilience and perseverance, knowing that God is with you every step of the way and that He will equip you to overcome any obstacles that come your way. His word said so in the scripture above.
Putting it all Together
Living a life of purpose begins with developing a deeper relationship with God and a willingness to align our lives with His purposes. It involves discovering our unique skills, talents and passions, then using them in ways that honor Him and serve others.
It requires openness to God’s guidance, the development of a compassionate heart, and the resilience to persevere through challenges. As you embark on this journey, remember you are never alone.
God is always by your side, guiding and directing your steps. Seek His purpose for your life and trust in His perfect plan.
